So, here we are, August 14th! It suddenly struck me, very hard over the head, that summer is almost over. My husband was making merry with the neighbours last night until the wee hours. I went to bed at 11:00 p.m. This morning he impishly tried to convince me that he came home at 11:15 p.m. I know it was more like 2:00 a.m. when he tripped through the door, but I digress. It was during his visit that he was persuaded to host our neighbourhood Christmas party. When he informed me that I was to co-host, since I apparently live here, too, my thought was instantly "Christmas Party! We're planning for Christmas, already?" Then I looked across the street and saw the orangy-red leaves on one of the Maples. Granted, it's been looking a little weak all summer, but there it was... a sign. Summer is drawing to a close.
It's been a lovely summer for the kids. Apart from two weeks of hockey camp, the boys have been living a very unstructured life. Living in the rurals has given them the opportunity to explore nature. They've trampled a little path behind our house to some secret clearing that I haven't seen. They need a space to call their own. It seems that they've built a bit of a lean-to out of materials that they've found lying about. We've also been able to star gaze from our yard, since we don't have street lights and our town is void of light pollution. We planted a vegetable garden and look forward to our daily harvests. During the past few weeks, bedtimes have been overlooked, mealtimes happen when hunger pangs set in and my children rarely look at a clock... But, all that is about to change...
I tried to "Google" tips for going back to school, but really, it all comes down to common sense. We're going to have to start adding a little structure to our days. My husband has been retired for over ten years. Even though I go out to work, sometimes seven days a week, I know I'll be the one to start laying down the ground rules. I'll be the big bad mommy. What else is new?
Anyway, I'm off to the neighbours for a BBQ and bon fire. When it gets dark I'm going to try to get a picture of the moon across the water. It's quite spectacular. I wish everyone a smooth transition from summer to fall.
